KIM D. SAUNDERS
President and Chief Executive Officer
Since joining M&F Bancorp, Inc., and Mechanics and Farmers (“M&F”) Bank as President and CEO in February 2007, Kim D. Saunders has made a positive impact. She has reached out to the community and met with dozens of current and prospective customers, business owners and community leaders around North Carolina. Additionally, Ms. Saunders has spearheaded organizational realignment and implemented numerous employee-focused initiatives to enhance operational efficiency and productivity at M&F. Her background and high-energy style of ‘best-practice’ based management make her ideally suited to lead M&F Bank into the “next great century.”
As part of M&F’s grand entrance into its next great century, Ms. Saunders guided M&F Bank through its first acquisition in eighty five (85) years. In March 2008, the Bank completed its acquisition of Mutual Community Savings Bank. This acquisition expanded the company’s operations into the Greensboro market. In June 2009, M&F also obtained $11.7 million dollars in new capital under the US Treasury TARP program, representing M&F Bancorp’s first major non-organic infusion of capital in more than fifty (50) years. Today, M&F Bank is a $270 million institution based in five major NC cities-Durham, Raleigh, Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and Charlotte.
Ms. Saunders serves on several Boards, including the NC Museum of Art Foundation, Triangle United Way, Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center’s Board of Visitors, NC Bankers Association, and the NC Chamber of Commerce. She received a gubernatorial appointment to the NC Central University Board of Trustees in 2012. Ms. Saunders is a recognized thought leader for the industry. She is the Vice Chairman of the Independent Community Bankers Association’s Minority Bank Council. She is an appointed member of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond’s Community Depository Institutions Advisory Council, the Community Bank Advisory Council for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the FDIC’s Advisory Committee on Community Banking.
Ms. Saunders was recognized as one of the state’s exceptional women leaders in 2009 by both the NC Magazine and the Triangle Business Leader Media Magazine. She also has been recognized as one the Nation’s 75 Most Powerful Women in Business by Black Enterprise Magazine (February 2010). She was selected by the Triangle Business Journal for one of its 2012 Women in Business Awards.
Before coming to M&F, Ms. Saunders was President and CEO at Consolidated Bank and Trust Company from December 2003 – February 2007. Ms. Saunders was the second female President and CEO in CB&T’s history, a distinction she holds at M&F Bank as well. Under Ms. Saunders’ leadership and direct management, CB&T returned to profitability for the first time in six years. Ms. Saunders also successfully led the Bank’s efforts to secure additional investor capital. In July 2005, the Bank became a part of a majority woman owned and managed publicly traded two-bank holding company, the Abigail Adams National Bancorp, Inc.
Ms. Saunders has more than 30 years of banking experience with various regulated commercial banks in a number of progressively responsible positions. She has expertise in credit administration, asset management, and economic development, as well in developing policy and lending programs for de novo financial institutions.
Prior to joining Consolidated in December 2003, Ms. Saunders was the Executive Vice President and Chief Lending Officer for City First Bank of D.C. (“City First”), a $100 million community development bank chartered by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency that is dedicated to promoting investment in Washington, D.C.’s under-served communities. Prior to joining City First Bank of DC, she served as the Chief Lending Officer and Executive Vice President at Enterprise Federal Savings Bank in Largo, Maryland from 1995 to 1998. Ms. Saunders began her banking career by completing the formal credit training program and serving as a commercial banking officer at The Chase Manhattan Bank in New York City.
Ms. Saunders holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics (Finance major) from the Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania and an honorary doctorate from Shaw University. She is also a graduate of Saint Catherine’s School in Richmond, Virginia.
