On March 27, 2020, the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (or CARES) was signed into law. This new legislation includes a host of different provisions aimed at helping businesses combat the negative economic effects of the COVID-19 crisis. 

 

In this presentation, Brooks Pierce attorneys Melissa Weaver, Steve LaSota, and Josh Lingerfelt will break down parts of the new law and its provisions for businesses, including:

• The Payment Protection Program, including loan forgiveness

• Tax credits and other tax provisions

• Changes to employee benefit plan rules that provide relief to participants and plan sponsors

Melissa Weaver has practiced employee benefits law for 30 years. Having previously served as an in-house attorney, she has a unique understanding of the needs of business owners regarding the design and implementation of employee benefits and deferred compensation plans.

As a real estate development attorney and a former general counsel for community and regional banks, Steve LaSota is well-versed in handling a wide variety of commercial transactions. With over 15 years of experience, Steve has handled extensive work in retail financial services and advised developers and lenders on nearly every aspect of commercial and residential real estate development and disposition.

 

Joshua Lingerfelt, Associate

Josh is a transactional attorney, focusing on federal income tax issues related to the structuring and formation of investment funds, REIT transactions and compliance, securities offerings, debt financings, mergers and acquisitions, and complex domestic and cross-border transactions. Josh is admitted to practice in New York and is currently seeking admission to the North Carolina State Bar.
