2011 Chamber U: June 22 - Neighborhood Revitalization & Economic Development
The Transformation of Rock Street: A Neighborhood’s Journey
In recent years, Durham has begun to see a resurgence of investment activity and a renewed interest in urban core neighborhoods as walkable, sustainable living options. However, the economic crisis and acceleration of aging housing stock within the city limits has led to a teardown epidemic. This presentation will introduce an innovative model that is being used to address the stabilization of a historic Southwest Central neighborhood in an effort to bring continued economic development to the area and affordable housing options to working families. Builders of Hope uses a patent-pending process of home recycling that incorporates economic benefits, environmental stewardship and social solutions. This case study will be used as an example of how city/community partnerships and funding can be leveraged in the successful redevelopment of truly mixed use and mixed income neighborhoods in less than ideal economic conditions.
