Volunteer with Us! Keep Durham Beautiful - THE BIG SWEEP
Every October, groups from across Durham volunteer to pick up litter in their local neighborhoods, parks, and streams.
This is Durham's largest litter cleanup event of the year, coordinated by Keep Durham Beautiful, Durham County Soil and Water Conservation, and the City of Durham Stormwater & GIS Services Division, with additional support provided by the Durham County General Services Department and the City of Durham Neighborhood Improvement Services Department.
Over 5,700 Big Sweep volunteers have picked up 177,000 pounds of litter since 2005. In 2018, 539 Big Sweep volunteers removed 17,000 pounds of waste, including 369 tires, from 33 cleanup sites. This event provides countless benefits to the communities involved, and is one of the most impactful means of keeping Durham beautiful.
Participating volunteers will receive trash bags, gloves, litter grabbers, and vests. The City’s Neighborhood Improvement Services Department and Durham County General Services assure that collected litter is properly recycled or sent to the landfill.
Join our Durham Chamber team on October 18 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and meet other Chamber members, make connections, and have fun as we make a difference in our city.
